Unluckily or luckily, I started my floristry business in June 2020, during Covid. It wasn’t exactly planned; it was a spontaneous decision after coming home from lively travels. With only a Floristry TAFE course and a few years of freelancing and shop work behind me, it felt like a huge step. But what began in uncertain times has since become a studio where I get to celebrate love, beauty, and the quiet art of flowers every day.
With the help of friends and family, I transformed a little shopfront on Main Street, Croydon, into my first flower shop. My dad and brother-in-law even built a wall, though in the process, they accidentally drilled a hole into Dads hand (he’s fine, thankfully!).
It was a strange time in Melbourne to be opening a store. We weren’t in lockdown, but no one really knew what was coming. I remember thinking everything would be back to normal in a few weeks, not yet understanding the full severity of the situation.
Within just two months of opening the shop, Melbourne was plunged into strict lockdown. It was a time of grief for many, of loneliness, anxiety, and boredom for others. The world felt paused, yet life kept moving forward. We were still growing older, celebrating anniversaries, welcoming new babies, and grieving the loss of loved ones. Everyday moments ,both joyful and heartbreaking, carried on, even as the city stood still.
I quickly realised just how much flowers had become an “essential service” for so many people. Orders came flooding in through emails, phone calls, and even Instagram DMs. My hero of a dad helped me put together my first website, and almost overnight the orders doubled. At first, I delivered everything myself. One day I managed 30 deliveries before collapsing into a full-blown meltdown and realising Icouldn’t do it alone. That’s when lovely Chris, my superstar courier (and still part of the team today), came on board to help. She saved me then, and continues to make sure flowers reach the people who need them most.
One of the most meaningful parts of those months was writing out every single note by hand, ready to be delivered with the flowers. Here are some of my favourite notes, I'll call it my COVID Flower Album:
Every Single lady deserves flowers x
